The Northman

The Northman ★★★★½

Regrettably, my first viewing of The Northman was hindered by my own paranoia. Some guy a few rows up kept fidgeting in his seat and looking around nervously — I thought I was about to get gibbed by bullets, but when he left for the bathroom an hour in and DIDN’T open fire on us when he got back, I was finally able to unclench my cheeks and enjoy the rest of the movie as intended.

I’ll spare you specifics ‘til an inevitable rewatch but, in spite of the distractions, I enjoyed the ever-loving crap out of this. Hyper-expressive historical savagery as seen through a finely-tuned lens: that’s what Eggers is all about, and this film is no deviation from that norm.

Also, for what it’s worth: my dad absolutely abhors  both The VVitch and The Lighthouse for their languid pacing and absence of a clear conclusion, but he seemed to think this was pretty dope. Take that as you will…
