Roma ★★★★½

What Cuaron does so masterfully in Roma is create a tangible and lived-in world.

It took me a little while to get into the narrative and the world, but when I did, it was glorious. Cuaron uses a lot of static long takes as opposed to his usual kinetic camera and it gives the film a calm and relaxing quality often.

Even though it’s calm often, he’s not afraid to bring the tension, highlighted in an ocean scene which had my heart thumping. That scene alone proves this should be seen in a theatre as the sound design is on another level!

Yalitza Aparicio is a standout as Cleo in what is a breakout performance. Even the child performances are never distracting.

Cuaron’s created another great one which feels authentic and filled with personal passion. He really is one of the greats.
