Nawapol Thamrongrattanarit's melancholic feature debut '36' — still my #1 film of his hand-in-hand with the truly special happy old year, 2019 (letterboxd.com/film/happy-old-year/) — has the heart of analog aesthetics incorporating a series of 36 static shots, like a traditional 36-exposure roll of film, but entirely shot on digital?! “It's kind of ironic, right? You want to tell a story about the lost, analog era, but as an independent filmmaker, you only have enough money for digital equipment. Maybe if I had had more money I would have used film. It would fit the themes in an attractive way. But I like the irony too. We even used some time-lapse sky footage from YouTube. When you see it on a big screen it looks really digital. We contacted the owner to ask him for permission and to see if he had a higher-quality version that we could use. He said he did, but couldn't remember which hard disk it was on. Then he wrote back saying he think he lost it.
Very digital era — it was perfect. I had to use it.”
