There’s this voyeuristic scene where the “camera” is positioned behind some palm fronds, providing a view of two Tyrannosaurus-rexes having slow, lumbering sex with one another. It’s an extremely detailed and uncomfortably sensual mating session, during which—I shit you not—both dinosaurs look at the camera. They break the fourth wall, implicating you in their lovemaking. This scene goes on just long enough that you start thinking about how you’re essentially watching a lurid cartoon. These animals are not real. They’re renderings.…

I’m trying to understand what makes Oogie Boogie so much worse than anyone else in this immoral demon city where people build corpse brides and civic leaders abduct senior citizens with the mayor’s blessing. I ask you, why is my guy Oogie Boogie the only pariah in Halloween Town? Is he a public drunk? Is he a tax evader? Or, is it possible the townspeople hate him not because he’s a detestable monster, but simply because he’s made of BUGS? Is a big sentient burlap sack full of live insects TOO MUCH for these supposedly depraved Halloweeners?
I’m just asking questions here !!!

When I was in middle school I started a MySpace page pretending to be the actor Dustin Diamond, who was famous for playing Screech on the sitcom Saved By the Bell (and stabbing a guy in a bar on Christmas). Almost immediately, fans started sending me (Diamond) heartfelt messages of praise and gratitude for my (his) work as Screech. There were some really touching notes filling up the inbox. Despite being the butt of so many jokes at Bayside High School,…

Nothing but the utmost respect for a super-bloody blender kill. Dug this funny take on home-invasion horror even more the second time.

When I was a kid, I’d see Evil Dead II in video stores all the time. I wasn’t allowed to rent it, so I’d stand in the aisle and stare at the weird skeleton guy on the front of the VHS. He had disturbingly human eyes. Was he smiling? For years, I’d wonder about the skeleton man. “What’s his deal? What’s his name? Is he villain or hero? Does he have a purpose?” When I was 15, I finally watched Evil…

Maybe I’m just a simple boy, easy to please. I like smart movies with tight scripts. I like clever modern updates to the Alan J. Pakula-style paranoid thrillers of yore. I like cozy house robes, neon-colored hair, and “egg things” from food carts. I like stories that disdain ubiquitous smart technology while acknowledging how these tools improve our quality of life. I like when mental illness feels considered and/or marginally authentic to my own experience. I like beautiful apartments with…
