I had a feeling I’d seen a film with the same story before and only realised halfway through that this was a remake of tokyo story. for a remake of - dare I say it - one of the best films ever made, tokyo family is pretty good. yōji yamada made the film work in its modern setting. however, I do think it’s near-impossible to emulate the flawless performances of chishu ryū and setsuko hara, but these very talented actors did the best they could. all in all, the film made me realise how timeless this story is, staying relevant for generations of families to come.
