#39: Directed by John Cassavetes
The villain from Road House plays a strip club owner desperate to pay off a gambling debt. The movie is visually messy and naturalistic, which is a little irksome at points. It's dreamy, mumbly, and slow. I do typically like guy-in-over-his-head stories, but this one I could take or leave honestly. Definitely a reference point for Uncut Gems, though.
Underrated Cronenberg. The cast in this movie is just perfect. Walken as the bewildered protagonist, Skerritt as the good natured sheriff, Sheen as the psycho politician. The film has a wonderful look and a cozy atmosphere even with the dark material it presents. Stephen King is notoriously bad at ending his stories, but this one is dynamite. Great movie.
