This was a very uncomfortable watch and so many scenes gave me major second hand embarrassement. It's actually quite a good directorial debut for Maggie Gyllenhaal. Since it's based on a book I felt there were details that were missing though. It was still a fascinating character study on someone who's made very questionable decisions in her life and still continues to do so. As a woman it's not talked about how sometimes being a mother is not a joyous experience in life or it's just not for them. It felt like something more was going to happen with Dakota Johnson's character and her family but it never really went anywhere. Not sure I liked the ending, it felt a little too melodramatic.
