The Hidden Fortress is definitely my least favourite of Kurosawa’s popular films. That's not to say it's a bad film, in fact there is a lot to like here - the widescreen format, which Kurosawa took to like a duck to water, is used in spectacular fashion with phenomenal composition that constantly engages and wows the viewer; Toshiro Mifune is commanding as the general, Misa Uehara is certainly a unique presence as the princess; and the sword duel in the middle of the film is incredible. What brings the film down for me are the two fool characters who are almost completely insufferable, especially after trying to sell out their companions for a reward. There is no forgiving that. C3PO and R2-D2 would never do that! If the film was ninety minutes and just Mifune and the princess this could have been a 9/10.
