Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl

Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl

“Not sure I deserved that.”

Just an all around banger from top to bottom. The digital and practical meshing of sequences isn’t as refined as later Gore Verbinski works but he’s still just fucking going for it that still feels revolutionary. There is more inventive action setup and payoff in the single room where Will and Jack Sparrow size each other up than most blockbusters in the last decade. Really reminds you that blockbusters don’t have to be soulless enterprises. It still taps into that sense of freedom and adventure we crave from our finest summer entertainment.

Everyone rightfully praises the character of Jack Sparrow but this rewatch may have solidified Elizabeth Swan is 2000s Disney’s Best original creation.

As good as The Last Boy Scout
