Arachnophobia borrows far too heavily (and obviously) from the Steven Spielberg playbook to be genuinely scary or funny. There are a few creative moments peppered throughout, but as a whole the movie never manages to justify its rigid adherence to formula. It's aggressively mediocre.
Still, John Goodman always raises the ol' score by a few points...
