Even with all the Studio meddling, Eggers manages to make an absolutely beautiful and mesmerizing experience. The closest example to this film I can think of is Valhalla Rising, but The Northman is better faced and keeps the same level of brutality. The poetry in the script adds so much to the mythological feel of everything and Eggers always kills it with the feeling of authenticity. I can’t speak if it is actually authentic, but I can say it definitely feels that way because of how well he sells it all.
