My Neighbor Totoro

My Neighbor Totoro ★★★★★

Light on plot and with little to no character development, action, danger, antagonising forces, moral dilemmas, or even any great stakes at all, My Neighbour Totoro disregards traditional storytelling devices in what is instead purely an exhibition of the kind of imagination, lightheartedness, and adventurous spirit that is best found only in young minds. In sisters Satsuki and Mei you would be hard pressed to find two better characterised or believably written children in any medium. Following them along in their escapades through an idyllic Japanese countryside is, from start to finish, an absolute delight.
