    Black Swan

    ★★★★½

I knew I needed to watch Black Swan at some point, but I wasn’t exactly looking forward to watching a ballerina movie. Luckily, it had little to do with the art of ballet and everything to do with the pursuit of perfection. As someone with OCD, I understand the internal struggle Natalie Portman’s character goes through (albeit to a less extreme extent). When I used to paint or produce music, every minute detail would torture me. I would spend hours…

As a HazMat technician and environmental first responder, I train for “airborne toxic events” multiple times a year. So you can bet I was excited for this movie to hit Netflix. However, I was disappointed to discover the movie glosses over the chemical event, only to serve as another take on the concept of existential dread (and a weak one at that). Even more upsetting, the emergency response scenes were riddled with inaccuracies.

For those of you who are interested,…

    Boston Strangler

    ★★★

Heading into Boston Strangler, I was fully anticipating similarities to Zodiac due to the numerous Letterboxd reviews that were drawing comparisons. What I didn’t anticipate was the movie to feel like a carbon copy (quite literally a carbon copy, the whole film was dominated with grey and yellow hues).

There are also shades of Dark Waters in the film. Like Boston Strangler, Dark Waters is an investigative thriller that similarly utilizes a gloomy color palette and sparsely weaves in family drama.…

    Mystic Pizza

    ★★★

I ate dinner at Mystic Pizza for the first time a few nights ago, so I felt obligated to watch the film that led to its nationwide recognition. I’m going to slice this review into two halves; one for Mystic Pizza the movie and one for Mystic Pizza the restaurant.

On paper, Mystic Pizza the movie fails to interest me in the slightest. An 80’s rom-com featuring the coming-of-age story of three young women working at a pizza parlor? No…

“I’ve waited too long for the wrong thing.”

I definitely waited too long for what I expected to be a disappointing film, but turned out to be outrageously fun! Did the star-studded cast seem unenthusiastic and dead inside, even though they still gave enjoyable performances? Yes (except for Christian Bale who puts his heart into every single role). Was the entire story a hot mess and lacking of any identity? Yup. Was the mystery suspenseful and gripping? Nope. Amsterdam was unable…

    “What’s remembered lives.”

Unfortunately, I can’t say that I’ll remember much of Nomadland. But hey, that’s kind of irrelevant, because it’ll live forever with its Academy Awards Best Picture win!

At first I was blown away by what I thought were great performances from non-professional actors, but then I found out these were real-life nomads telling real stories. While this makes those touching monologues from Swankie and Bob Wells even more special, I can’t help but feel like those poor…
