Dennis Duffy’s review published on Letterboxd:
A ton of fun but I will always find this incredibly frustrating, mostly because it abandons the genuinely interesting exploration of humanity’s insignificance in the eyes nature for a more formulaic blockbuster akin to marvel. The monster action is good enough, but aside from the great helicopter sequence, almost no sense of scale. The awe of Gareth Edwards’ film is gone. No characters here either, the actors are only there to make unfunny quips and pose during the action. Visually though, I find this so interesting. The way Vogt Roberts and Wong not only recreate but fetishize the iconography of Vietnam War films especially and very obviously Apocalypse Now, as odd a choice as it is, often looks stunning. Great use of color.
