Real Declan’s review published on Letterboxd:
you are right to dislike this movie. this movie was announced two months ago and feels like it was made in that interim. it moves so fast but goes nowhere. the main character is non-functional. the only good fights are the first and last one, leaving the intervening 5 to starve. by all rights it is unwatchable. i have long wondered if there was a movie that could exist as dogtooth's opposite in tone and content and come out giving me the same feeling. in this i have found it
but i ask you now to consider mortal kombat. i fucking love mortal kombat. i have loved mortal kombat for as long as i can remember. it may be one of the only western-made video games that can hold my attention. and every idiosyncracy, every notch in this franchise has been made because nobody at midway knew what other dev studios were like. they locked themselves in a bunker in 1990 and when they came out their minds stayed behind. they made special forces, MK gold, and deadly alliance. they made MKvsDC. they made injustice 1. they made MK9's combo system. anyone in a leadership position for mortal kombat has to be functionally insane. to make mortal kombat you cannot know life's functions but you must love its results. there is no other way this thing could have gone.
they knew they couldn't have shao kahn in this movie so they gave us reiko. it tells us everything we ever need to know. what a terrible, extremely watchable movie. MORTAL KOMBAT 2 (2022) will be the next american gesamtkunstwerk
