    Gilbert

    ★★★★

For a documentary about a foul-mouthed comedian whose whole showbiz persona is built around how grating he is, this was surprisingly lovely.

I do think the premise of Gilbert might be slightly flawed tho. The film is centered around the supposed impossibility that Gilbert Gottfried is now married with children. I guess Gilbert's friends never saw that coming, nor did he, so we're supposed to be shocked too? I don't know, is it really so inconceivable that a successful and…

In the Name of the Father

In the Name of the Father is an outstanding film about a real-life tragedy that could be tricky to dissect. It's the story of an IRA-linked terrorist attack that left four people dead, and the young man who had a confession of responsibility beaten out of him (which he would later rescind). To watch this 1993 film in the present day is to become acutely aware of how the issue of terrorism is handled differently now in both movies and…

    Malignant

    ★★★★½

Malignant seems to have polarized audiences, with some finding it one of the most original and audacious horror films in recent memory, and others just thinking it's hella stupid. I pretty much agree with both sides... but (in this case at least) the way this film fuses together a multifaceted, highbrow, innovative technique with an insanely ridiculous premise might be a big part of why I ended up liking it so much.

Tonally, Malignant feels like a throwback to 90's…

    North Dallas Forty

    ★★★★½

Fear & Loathing in North Dallas Forty has been brought to you by roid rage, cheap beer & smokes, and the word fuck

A battered, exhausted Nick Nolte drinking a Budweiser and smoking a cigarette on an exercise machine inside his football team's packed gym with nobody batting an eye because a lot of 'em are doing the exact same thing---that to me is the defining image of North Dallas Forty.

I'm tempted to say you could read something deep into that…

You people giving The Room half a star and being like "how could a movie possibly be any worse?" You haven't even begun to gaze into the abyss.

I like my bad movies looking like they were found in a box that was home to a family of possums living under a leaky sink at a drive-in that's been closed for 40 years.

I like my bad movies to have a musical score that sounds like a cheap bootleg of…

Jim & Andy: The Great Beyond

    ★★★★

The very first shot of Jim and Andy is of a now gray-bearded 55-year-old Jim Carrey, and it feels like he's playing a character. Is this Old Jim we're seeing? Or Documentary Jim? Or are we just so used to Some Character Jim that we don't recognize the real him when we see it? Or even more disconcerting: did Real Jim get tossed aside somewhere along the road to the fame he now enjoys, possibly lost in the funhouse that…
