Daxtreme’s review published on Letterboxd:
I like James Gunn's ambition but I think he went slightly too far with this movie, especially in terms of humor.
Regardless, if you're looking for a blockbuster with actual, meaningful character development and not characters that are just used to move forward plot points and whatnot, then this is it. Probably the most character-driven movie in the whole MCU.
In fact, there's barely a plot to this film. It's about family, and belonging, even for those who think they deserve neither of those things.
Ego was an interesting choice of character, and although it worked really well thematically with Peter, I had trouble getting into his character, mainly because it didn't seem to me like this was an actual millions-years-old planet right there. Also, Ego spends way too much time indulging in expository dialogue and not enough being an interesting character of his own.
But there are lots of really imaginative sequences in this movie, and enchanting landscapes, and the characters are varied and funny...
Yeah, another winner here for the MCU.
