I think Chaplin's unbelievable foresight into what cinema could be capable of, ended up really being his downfall in these early shorts.
His technical proficiency is already far beyond pretty much any of his contemporaries, he is framing and orchestrating scenes at such a high level. The problem though is that he's doing this on less than half-baked narratives and it really just leads to a lot of stagnation.
