I think Chaplin's unbelievable foresight into what cinema could be capable of, ended up really being his downfall in these early shorts.
His technical proficiency is already far beyond pretty much any of his contemporaries, he is framing and orchestrating scenes at such a high level. The problem though is that he's doing this on less than half-baked narratives and it really just leads to a lot of stagnation.

First half is an incredible, absurdist, nightmare adjacent fever dream. It's everything the premise promised and then some. It's absolutely filled to the brim with quirks, flare, perfect set-ups capped off with hilarious, unforeseeable payoffs. A slew of I Think You Should Leave-isms, and the endearing sweetness of something like Joe Pera Talks With You. It's nothing short of euphoric, must-see, groundbreaking cinema.
And then it (awkwardly) shifts gears and kind of sucks!

Hard movie to watch, even harder to talk about.
Strikingly ambitious, gorgeous in every sense of the word, disgusting, but also pretty fun.
Idk, weird weird movie. I kinda loved it tho, Jacob Elordi is a fucking star, and Barry is freak x100.
It's very funny too, I think I see the thematic vision, but I want to see it again before I make any sort of claim as to what it is.
