Assassin's Creed 2016
The concept at the core of this movie is fascinating, especially as a video game adaptation. The rest is a goddamn holy mess, and (most unforgivably), it looks pretty cruddy and the action sucks. Sigh. I was so ready to find a secret masterpiece here.

Passengers 2016
This is a movie that WANTS to be bizarre and is doomed by how perfunctory it feels in every single way. Yes, as you might have heard, the premise is weird and creepy, but don't mistake that for something interesting. There's nothing in the lead performances to back it up.

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story 2016
Terrific. Vital, grimy, with beautifully directed set-pieces, a resounding battle cry that actually tries to make sense of the franchise's Rebel Alliance as being more than "the good guys." The first 20 minutes is too chaotic, a few lines land with a thud, and I'd love more time with some of the characters, but I loved the mess. When's the last time a Star Wars movie felt messy?

Green Room 2015
holy cow. I know why I'd been avoiding this one, but I'm also sad I waited this long. What an absolutely essential work for 2016. Matter-of-fact, horrifying, transformative.

Neruda 2016
Gorgeous! Gorgeous!! And for one moment in the middle there where its conceit really snaps into place, perfect. But the Neruda stuff doesn't work, and the flow of the story was frustrating enough that I spent the first 45 minutes largely bored. I love what it's trying to do--frame a biopic in the most literary, self-aware terms possible, which makes it a fascinating companion to Jackie. But at so many crucial moments, it lacks heft.

Things to Come 2016
Plus ça change, plus c'est la même chose.
...y'know what else doesn't change?? Mia Hansen-Love being just the greatest.
