David’s review published on Letterboxd:
Shang-chi and the legend of the ten rings, is the latest marvel movie recently released in cinema. The movie is directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, I was very unaware of the cast in this movie apart from one recognisable actor "Awkwafina" who was in the 2nd Jumanji movie.
The story of this movie is great, it has some really good humour elements reminding me of Thor Ragnorak as well as a great story all about family which reminds me of the most recent MCU movie Black Widow. I loved the way the film was directed and the script was great, with the ideas of flashback working really well to highlight and build the characters relationships abit further as well as giving them more of a motive for their actions and plans. This movie has some of the best action sequences out of any MCU movie; the hand to hand combat is exquisite, there is good tension and excitement which makes for such a brilliant film.
All of the actors in this movie do a great job and are a great addition to the MCU. I can't wait too see what the future holds for some of these characters particularly Shang-Chi after the exciting ending of the movie, setting up possible future plans for the MCU.
My favourite character in this movie has too be the mandarin played perfectly by "Ben Kingsley". He is so great in this movie, everytime he is on screen he makes me laugh, which adds a lot to the movie contrasting between the more serious elements of family, and tense action. The training montages are also excellently done even though we have seen them previously in the MCU it feels fresh and up to date. The bus scene is one of my favourites of the movie, you can't take your eyes off the screen as so much is going on around you.
Overall I'd rate this movie a 5 ⭐️ this goes down as one of my top MCU movies, based off the unique action scenes, the great comedy, and fantastic story arc for these characters. It definitely exceeded my expectations as I wasn't sure what to expect going into this movie, it felt fresh and current, and excites me for the direction of the MCU.
