Dave Taylor’s review published on Letterboxd:
If there had been more than a handful of movies released this year, would ‘Judas and the Black Messiah’ still have been nominated for all those Oscars?
But I dare say that even though the story itself is very compelling, the movie was not. But I’m having trouble discerning exactly why that is.
I guess it boils down to feeling bored and restless though basically the entire runtime. Why though? The actors all did serviceable jobs (however I will admit to having trouble understanding Daniel Kaluuya in a few scenes), the jazzy score was interesting...
It was something about Shaka King’s direction, or possibly the script itself that left the whole proceeding feeling a little dry to me.
An important story with some powerful scenes, but overall I didn’t find it all that engaging.
