8½ seems to make filmmaking look both incredible and hellish. Every shot in this film is spectacular, with surreal washes of white lighting, characters consumed by shadows before being consumed by light, and some insane set and costume design. Combined with a descent into madness and the occasional flashbacks, Fellini blurs the line between the real and the fantastical throughout the film, leaving me wondering what on earth is going on, but still being glued to the screen.
