    The Wonder

    ★★★★

I’m a sucker for a film about religious fanaticism and Sebastiàn Lelia’s The Wonder is no different. While my rating is not a strong 4.0 due to some issues with pacing and cinematography, overall its engaging metaphors, superb acting and directorial choices causes me to round up.

The Wonder is quite an interesting film once you put the puzzle pieces together. The first act is its weakest as it takes too much time to get going but once it does, it’s gripping.…

    She Said

Maria Schrader’s She Said is a powerful film. While I had some issues with it early on, there’s no denying that She Said hits an intensity almost immediately and maintains it right up to the final shot.

Similar to this year’s Till, it feels as though the various members of the cast understood the importance of the film. From Carey Mulligan dominating her scenes to Samantha Morton’s five minutes on screen, no one is phoning in. Even Mike Houston (playing…

    “Good Afternoon!”

The fact that I enjoyed Sean Anders’ Spirited as much as I did is a Christmas miracle. I hate musicals so boy did my eyes roll when I went into this blind and saw Will Ferrell doing a song and dance. However, this grew on me as time went on. With a really fun vibe, good musical numbers and solid cinematography, Spirited is a pleasant surprise.

Spirited is fun throughout. From Jimmy Kimmel doing a quick monologue cameo to…

Nicholas Cage: What is your third favorite movie of all-time?
    Javi: Paddington 2

    Two hours later…

Nicholas Cage:  (sniffling) - Paddington 2 is incredible!

Unfortunately, I didn’t love Tom Gormican’s The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent as much as everyone else. Despite a unique premise, strong performances, and an intricate score I found myself bored more often than not.

This is an absurdist comedy if there ever was one. The idea of Nicholas Cage playing Nicholas Cage in an action-comedy is bonkers…

If these Mississippi crackers could see you now.”

Clearly I watched a different film than everyone else because I had a blast with David O. Russell’s Amsterdam. With a quirky, well-paced script that would make Wes Anderson proud and truly entertaining performances from a stacked cast, Amsterdam is a pleasant surprise.

    O. Russell’s script is filled to the brim with oddities. Valerie (Margot Robbie) collects shrapnel from soldiers she treats to make art, characters sporadically sing songs (such as the…

    The Outfit

    ★★★½

How could I go from being genuinely creeped out by Mark Rylance in Bones and All to wanting him to be my grandfather in the span of 24 hours? The Outfit, directed and co-written by Graham Moore has some solid performances, one impressive setting, and great costume design albeit some pacing issues in the second act.

The cast of The Outfit all give commendable performances coming in and out of one location taking turns showcasing their skills. Mark Rylance has incredible…
