Daniel Johnson’s review published on Letterboxd:
Who knew that the live action reboot of a cartoon from the late 1980s would turn out to be such a chaotic and creative picture?
The technical elements and overall presentation of this thing is genuinely so much fun. I love the blend they accomplish between live action and animation, but I really love the insane blend of all of these vastly different animation styles. I imagine mixing (what is seemingly) claymation with 3D animation and live action footage would be an absolute nightmare, but this is all really well done. The writing really lends itself well to the utter chaos of it all, providing surprises that you absolutely don’t want but manage to be much more fun than they should be, but I think the biggest feat of the film is that the mix of reality and fiction is so convincing that I just completely bought into it. There were some things they referenced or alluded to that I just nodded my head at and didn’t question. I don’t know if that’s a sign of our culture being absolutely broken beyond repair or just a fun thing that the movie accomplished, but whatever. I don’t care. Everything is bad, but I had fun with this movie.
