Yes this is movie is cheesy but it's also very good. The first half especially is masterful in the way it builds tension and anticipation towards Manikkam eventually losing his shit and returning to the violence he swore to leave behind. The movie is definitely very "hero worship-y" but you should expect anything else from a Rajinikanth film. When we finally get to see the gangster Baasha, it's pure over the top intensity in the best way possible. I don't think anyone else could pull off Rajini's roles, and that's why he is one of the greatest blockbuster actors of all time.
God I fucking hate this movie. It feels like Todd Phillips watched The King of Comedy and Taxi Driver and decided he wanted to jump from dudebro comedies to Scorsese-like films. This movie feels like it's supposed to have a message, maybe about mental health (why you would choose a crazy clown who kills people with laughing gas in the comics as the subject for this is beyond me), or the wealthy, or "society" or something, but ultimately amounts to…
