Damien Chazelle delivers another masterclass in how to write and direct a motion picture. Babylon is a deprived, noisy, swing for fences, drug fuelled epic that doesn’t pull its punches. It’s monumental, grotesque and fucking hilarious whilst managing to sustain a kinetic energy that doesn’t feel physically possibly given it’s excessive runtime.
A bold and ruthless depiction of Hollywood and its cutthroat nature that Chazelle has no qualms about tearing chunks out of. That is before having the sheer audacity…
A really touching little indie film about addiction that just about manages to steer clear of poverty porn cliches thanks to its patient and conservative storytelling. Absolutely peppered with great performances fronted by Andrea Riseborough who is always flawless; amazing to see her get some recognition.
Call Me By Your Name is a transcendent love story, a celebration of self-discovery and the complexities of the human heart. Its two leads are endlessly captivating, beautifully portraying their fascinating characters intriacte feelings and emotions, often without saying a word.
Theres a passion and revelry to this film that only serves to fill you with an overwhelming sense of joy. You would have to be dead inside not to love it.
Using some of the most arresting animated visuals you'll see this year, the beautifully constructed Garden Party is a captivating short created by a group of French 3D artists. Cleverly juxtaposing the majestic, innocence of nature against the grim, brutality of humanity. Dark, primal and a whole heap of fun. Be sure to check out this Academy Award nominee on YouTube.
