My Favourite Film of Each Genre

    Rewatched in anticipation of Nope.

This is how you balance tension and comedy. Lil Rel Howery in particular is hysterical, but the humour is always placed in a part of the script that either doesn’t undercut tension, or disarms you by luring you into a false sense of security before laying on the horror.

Great script, great performances, great directing - particularly all the little details of foreshadowing, symbolism, etc. I feel like I…

Despite its generic plot and obnoxious-as-fuck camerawork / editing, the relentless action and charismatic performances from Gosling and Evans make it watchable and entertaining.

Forgot to review this when it came out!

It’s been out a little while now so I’m not going to be adding anything new to the conversation, but this was the biggest (positive) surprise I’ve had with a film in years.…

    YouTube review

This was maybe my 6th viewing, and I’m almost certain it’s my favourite film of the 2020’s so far, as well as being one of my absolute favourites in the MCU.

I love where it leaves off. I’m excited for lower-stakes, solo Spidey adventures!

  • Thor: Love and Thunder

    2022 Ranked

Taika is one of my favourite directors, and Ragnarok one of my favourite MCU films, so please know where I’m coming from when I say this was a horrible mess. Actually gives The Dark World a run for its money as the worst Thor film.

Probably didn’t help that I was in a cinema full of kids that wouldn’t shut the fuck up (it’s not their fault, they’re kids, but I wish their parents would have told them to quieten down). That’s the last time I go to a 5pm screening!

  • Lightyear

    Lightyear

    ★★★

Considering the first 3 Toy Story films are among my favourites of all time, I was expecting a fair bit more from this.

The animation is beautiful and evokes a bunch of different sci-fi films, from 2001: A Space Odyssey to Interstellar, to The Martian to Blade Runner.

I was fine with Chris Evans doing the voice of Buzz, and it was admittedly a fun-filled adventure with kooky side characters (Sox being the best one).

My main issue with the film…

  • Jurassic World Dominion

    Jurassic World Dominion

    ★★½

I just about threw up in my mouth when Ellie said that Ian Malcolm had “slid into her DM’s”. On the other hand, I have a new crush in the form of DeWanda Wise. Her character was cool as fuck.

  • Bo Burnham: The Inside Outtakes

    Bo Burnham: The Inside Outtakes

    ★★★★

When your outtakes are better than most comedians’ actual specials. I’m running out of superlatives to describe Bo Burnham. 1985 in particular is an absolute tune. His podcast with himself about PC culture was also a highlight. And the fake YouTube ads. Just perfect.
