The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo ★★★★

Watched this for the first time the other night. Meticulously crafted, deeply unsettling and brilliantly atmospheric.

The central mystery was pretty intriguing, but the performances by Daniel Craig and - in particular Rooney Mara - are what keep this so engaging.

Gorgeously bleak cinematography, same for the musical score, and the overall direction is masterful.

What holds this back from being as good as it could’ve been was the runtime and pacing. I don’t mind a slow burn and was super invested for the most part, but the third act was way too long and the actual climax of the movie is a good half an hour before the end.

Still, very intense, suspenseful and overall just extremely precisely edited. The script had some smart dialogue too but there’s the odd choice that I’m not quite sure how to feel about yet.

Definitely recommend if you don’t mind really dark and heavy movies.

P.S. Just made a David Fincher Ranked list. Let me know what other director rankings / lists in general I should make!
