Blade Runner 2049 2017
For those of you who aren’t aware of my rating system, 5 stars are pretty rare for me to give out. I handed out 3 in the entirety of the 2010’s, Blade Runner 2049 being the most recent. It has now been 3 years since Denis Villeneuve’s futuristic masterpiece was released, so I thought it was time I talked about it.
So what makes 2049 so special? Well, just... everything. For a start - and this is the highest compliment I can give…

The Handmaiden 2016
“Beauty is cruel by nature.”
Well HOLY SHITBALLS, this was an experience and a half!!
If I’m being honest, I’ve reached the point with movies lately (as I’m sure a fair amount of you have too) where I’ve just been craving something really good. I’m not saying we haven’t had any good films since the whole Covid crisis kicked off, but they’ve been few and far between and even then the best films I’ve seen in that time have still…

Jackass Forever 2022
As good as a Jackass movie could possibly be without Bam and Ryan. I was simultaneously filled with childhood joy seeing Steve-O, Knoxville and the rest of the gang back, while also feeling kind of empty at the noticeable absence of those two guys.
Given their ages, I feared it might have been somewhat watered down, but they haven’t gotten any less gnarly and the new additions are actually not bad.
Some of the stunts I’ve seen before, and it did feel like it was over quite quickly, but can’t wait for Jackass 4.5 to release!

The Revenant 2015
The next Iñárritu film honestly can’t come soon enough. After the one-two punch that was Birdman and The Revenant, I was strongly impressed by both - little did I know I’d have to wait at least 7-8 years for his next outing!
I find it interesting what a contrast this performance by Leo brings compared to his previous one in The Wolf of Wall Street; he has to carry basically the whole film using barely any dialogue, and IMO he does so masterfully. …

The Lighthouse 2019
Just want to express my sadness at how overlooked this film has been in terms of Academy Awards recognition.
I know some films like Uncut Gems, Midsommar and The Farewell didn’t get a single nomination - which I also think is ridiculous - but I really think The Lighthouse deserves to be competing in at least 6 major categories (score, cinematography, actor, supporting actor, director and picture). Possibly even production design, editing and a couple of the smaller sound awards too.…

Spider-Man: No Way Home 2021
Not rating just yet as there’s a lot to take in, but I loved the second half of this.
First time in the cinema in years hearing people clapping and cheering so much!
A truly special cinematic experience.
