Denis Villeneuve is the Frank Lloyd Wright of 21st century science fiction design. The spaceship in Arrival was sleek, minimalistic, and dynamic in its stillness. In Blade Runner 2049, the brutalist architecture reflected a dystopian world that seemed tired of itself. Villeneuve has created a nice balance with Dune, in that the space ships and stations are imposing but inviting, intimidating but engaging.
I’m in the “never read Dune don’t have a horse in the race make pretty things and entertain me for please no more than two hours you already announced a sequel” camp. So while I enjoyed this film, I missed some of the chaos, camp, and twenty minutes shorter-ness of Lynch’s Dune. That’s about it, though. I’m excited for Villeneuve’s Part 2! Hopefully, Zendaya will have more to do than occasionally taking out her nose tube, and we’ll get some hardcore worm riding.
