This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth.

    Are you watching closely?

And so begins The Prestige, Christopher Nolan's masterpiece. Now, the man has made a few rather good movies so this as a claim is remarkable, but nevertheless warranted. Why?

After we're told to watch closely we're explained how a magic trick works. The pledge, the turn and the prestige. Show the audience something and make it seem entirely ordinary. Oh, wow. I loved the structure but I cannot get past the hilariously high number of ridiculous things characters in this film did. I mean, it must have been on purpose because it was beyond parody but even in a meta-world some of this was just dumb. And I watch all the dodgy horrors.

There is not much to be said about this movie. Arguably the first in the finest trilogy ever (an argument I often have with myself), it's just perfect. Charm, wit, excitement, Oedipus complex, flux capacitors and 1.21 jigawatts.

What a film to christen my 2018 with. I don't get to watch many films these days so I thought long and hard about what to watch tonight, and this won out. Thankfully.

It's a frakking masterpiece. Watching it for the third time, knowing what was happening and being able to truly keep on top of it opens so much more to the viewer. You sit there working out who is who and where is where. Brilliant, taut, tight, masterful.

I implore you, watch this film. Here, borrow my Blu-ray.
