The Battle of Algiers

The Battle of Algiers ★★★★½

Exact Rating: 9.7/10

The Battle of Algiers is a grounded and thoroughly poignant fictionalization of Algerian independence from French colonialism. Great writing, fantastic cinematography, a fascinating mix of documentary- and fictitious-storytelling techniques, solid acting, and the actual inclusion of a person who fought in the real revolution, Saadi Yacef (El-Hadi Jafar), all help to make this film more immersive––and all the more intense. It occasionally suffers from transitional issues that disrupt the narrative's continuity, but those instances are very sparse, so they do not weigh down on the film all that much.
