Sure, Keanu (God bless him) can't pull off the accent to save his life, but that doesn't take away from everything else that is going on here. Copolla utilizes all his strength as a filmmaker to bring the greatest last hurrah for classical visual effects; the model work, set design, matte paintings, are all on display and look beautiful. For such a famous and foundational story they are able to imbue it with beauty, longing, romance, sadness and dread; things that no other adaptation that I've seen have managed.
Colin Clive is awesomely unhinged as the good Doctor. Boris Karloff instantly cemented his legend status, bringing humanity and menace to the monster in equal doses - absolutely the GOAT.
