Mitchell Cronk’s review published on Letterboxd:
2022 Ranked - HERE
After years of delays, one of my most anticipated films of the year, Top Gun: Maverick, has finally been released in theatres and I’m happy to say that all the hype surrounding it was warranted. Tom Cruise has done it again as he and director Joseph Kosinski have managed to seemingly do the impossible, they made a legacy sequel over thirty years after the original and the final product is one of the best blockbuster films in recent memory. Tom Cruise returns as Maverick and he certainly carries the load here as the protagonist, anytime he’s doing stunts has me thoroughly entertained. It’s just so obvious how much care was put into this film in an age where it doesn’t always seem like blockbusters get that care, all the action scenes with the fighter jets are heart-pounding and especially during the climax my breath was taken away. I loved the new additions to the cast, specifically Miles Teller as Rooster and his relationship with Maverick. It’s unexpectedly full of touching moments as well and all the themes are so well-balanced. There’s very few nitpicks I have with Top Gun: Maverick overall, I think when I watch it again I may live it even more but even as it stands I can’t imagine this will slip out of my top ten favourites of 2022, it’s the perfect example of a blockbuster done right and I’m so happy it’s doing so well at the box office right now.
