Judas and the Black Messiah

Judas and the Black Messiah ★★★½

Look: no film funded by a major studio or featuring a companion soundtrack album was going to actually dig deep into Fred Hampton or his socialist politics, but for a middle America friendly film, what we have here is pretty damn good. Kaluuya is utterly mesmerizing as Hampton, and he’s matched by Dominique Fishback’s quiet but complex performance as Deborah Johnson. The script, and by extension, the film, lets Lakeith Stanfield down, leaving him bizarrely stranded and hamstrung by the limits of the story.

The most important thing about this is that it’ll get people to talk more about Fred Hampton. And that’s an amazing thing.
