    A Haunting in Venice

    ★★½

Fun that Branagh is still making these, even if they’re not much more than mildly diverting. The most interesting aspect is when he decides to throw in a couple of goofy wide angles and then shoot the basement sequence like The Conjuring, which was awesome. It gives a sort of anachronistic style to a movie so devoted to historical setting. Wish there was more of that.

Smile did it better. This was really great, very tense and disturbing, but when the second half starts it gradually loses steam. The ending is honestly a huge shrug too. So now what, she spooks other kids? To what end? Oh well.

The thing is, there is a lot to criticize here. The tacked on A24-style Trauma (tm) stuff, the sometimes overly done formal tricks (how many upside down road shots do we need?), the thin plot, etc etc. Yet, this still scared the hell out of me, and left me with a a sense of dread that I haven't felt since Hereditary. This takes basically the opposite formal opproach to Hereditary (lots of jump scares and a simpler premise), but shares that same sense of cruelness to it's characters and the audience. There is no escape, and every successive scare and possible emotional catharthis amounts to nothing.

After a week-long journey of revisiting Christopher Nolan's filmography, I finally got the chance to see Tenet earlier this day in IMAX. And yes, as you may have heard, it is quite the spectacle to behold. This is about as pure of a movie experience as it gets in 2020 (especially considering the conditions). But how was the film itself?

I loved it, to put it bluntly, despite its shortcomings. To get the negatives out of the way, the sound…
