The dirty atmosphere and scale of The Northman makes it the most epic Robert Eggers film to date. The attention to details is astonishing, though the characters mostly speak modern English, unlike in The Witch which made for an immersive experience. But The Northman is also an experience worth watching and a bloody one as well. Especially with the score which is something truly unique.
Alexander Skarsgård is the brute force of this film and he is absolutely menacing to look at. Anya Taylor-Joy has a mysterious aura around her character. Nicole Kidman steals the show in one single scene. Claes Bang makes a great villain who is also not just evil for the sake of it. And then both Ethan Hawke and Willem Dafoe have their own moments that become the highlights.
The Northman is most definitely a one-time thing and it will be a long time before we see another one of such scale. Films like this are usually not the box-office sweepers which also was the case with The Last Duel. But maybe this will change, because it is something that has a potential to cement a future for Nordic epic genre.
