Fabian’s review published on Letterboxd:
I can't think of another romantic story that has been told with such beautiful care and attention to detail as Céline Sciamma's Portrait of a Lady on Fire. The chemistry between Noémie Merlant and Adèle Haenel is amazing. So much of the story is told through the emotions expressed by their eyes; the film would need no dialogue at all to succeed in conveying the narrative.
The story is so simple, but so effective. A profound and intimate masterpiece that left me speechless and brought me to tears. What an amazing performance by the two leading actresses. That final shot made me raise my rating to full five stars; there was no way around it. Just wow.
It's just a completely unforgettable experience. The story looks so simplistic from the outside, but Céline Sciamma's immersive direction is what makes it so outstanding. I can't believe I missed this in theaters, but at least I finally rectified my mistake of delaying my viewing.
