Taken from an essay I wrote for my MP - Horror class.

Inspired by director E. Elias Merhige's near-death experience in a car accident, Begotten is a near-impossible film to rate or describe for that matter. It does not set out to entertain the way a Jaws or a Nightmare On Elm Street does, reveling in suspenseful set pieces or jump scares. There is no dialogue, and no narrative in any traditional sense; the loose tale of cosmic death and…

Every now and then, a movie catches you by surprise...even as you're experiencing it. Sometimes, a movie even seems to coalesce suddenly before your very eyes (and in your heart). And as it reaches that final, human crescendo, you're left unexpectedly breathless, overcome emotionally by the movie's impact. Such a movie is Philip Ridley's bizarre 1991 effort, The Reflecting Skin. It's not an easy film to watch or…

This probably belongs in the under-seen 80’s horror gems category. It basically works as plastic reality meets Nightmare On Elm Street rip-off but polished with a ton of style and Timothy Spall acting circles around everyone else in the cast.

For a movie that’s 2.5 hours long, features 25 albums and is directed by Edgar Wright, this feels kind of shallow? Like I definitely enjoyed watching it, but I understand just as little about the Mael brothers now as I did before I started the documentary. I’m guessing this was intentionally done by Edgar and the band to retain some element of mystique, but because of those decisions, the documentary feels surprisingly empty given how much is being discussed.

Quite possibly Nolan's worst effort to date. An expository load of drivel that has the gumption to continually assault its audience with unnecessary information. If you don't get sick of characters explaining things that make no sense, you'll be bored senseless by the emotionally manipulative score and the ineptitude of the storytelling. "Disastrous" doesn't even begin to highlight the movie's lack of restraint.
