The Northman

The Northman ★★★★

i'd argue that this could stand to be a bit more weird -- eggers is caught between all his historicist tendencies and his desire to make something genuinely insane and out-there, and what that results in is a film that's almost deceptively straight-forward and mannerist; too austere to be gonzo, but too violent to be 'tasteful'. being that as it may, it's still a great soviet/japanese aesthetic riff on conan the barbarian's serialized pulp, and the depth of eggers' imagery will stand the test of time. we must cherish it when auteurs get the chance to make something this expensively beautiful and gruesome.
