The Exorcist

The Exorcist ★★★★★

"My idea of Heaven is a solid white nightclub with me as a headliner for all eternity, and they love me."- gay priest

Always the first item of evidence supporting Friedkin's claim to masterhood. Like he explains in interviews, it's about the mysteries of faith and he tackles them with a spectrum of scientific detail before going off the deep end and it still elicits goosebumps 40 years later. The Exorcist is a masterclass in build up and release. The promise of merciless terror and then shaking the foundations of what is considered moral. People forget the powerhouse performance in sympathy that Ellen Burstyn delivers. Perhaps the most convincing and realistic horror performance there is.
