The Kid

The Kid ★★★★½

Why I watched this one? I recently read Todd Gaines' review on this movie...and realized it was one of the few Charlie Chaplin full length movies that I had not seen....then this morning I saw it sitting on my library's DVD shelf....so I think fate was calling for me to watch this one.

What is this one about? Chaplin's Tramp finds an orphaned baby and decides to take care of it. After 5 years pass....the authorities decide it is in the best interest of the child for him to be seperated from the Tramp.

My thoughts on this one? This is a classic in every sense of the word. Probably the best Chaplin movie I have seen. Chaplin and the kid (Jackie Coogan) have great chemistry together. At one point in the movie they take the kid away....if that scene does not pull at your heart strings...you might want to check to see if you have a heart. Turns out in real life the kid was having a hard time crying...so his real dad told him if he did not cry....he was going to be sent away to a work house. That dad sounds like the first ever stage dad.

Lots of great scenes in this movie...many of which I have seen in documentaries. The music is outstanding, the performances top notch and Chaplin is simply awesome....this is one to check out.

In the Robert Downey Jr movie Chaplin, the making of this movie has a decent about of screen time...especially the fight Chaplin had with the producers over payment for a 6 reel movie.
