The Hidden Fortress

The Hidden Fortress ★★★½

Why I watched this one? Continuing to track down and watch Akira Kurosawa movies. This was the 9th one I have seen so far. Plus this movie was a huge influence on George Lucas and his Star Wars world.

What is this one about? Lured by gold, two greedy peasants escort a man and woman across enemy lines. However, they do not realize that their companions are actually a princess and her general.

My thoughts on this one? A Kurosawa comedy? Well when the movie is dealing with the two greedy peasants in is indeed a comedy. The rest of the time we are in more typical Kurosawa territory....a great and honorable samurai (regular Kurosawa player..Toshiro Mifune) saving the day. I was impressed with some of the action scenes ....especially with the amount of extras used in the early scenes. Although I liked this times I felt the pace was way too slow. Spending 160 with the two greedy peasants was almost they pretty much repeat the same scenes over and over. Final thought: I know many people consider this one an all-time classic....but to me this one falls short of that. I enjoyed it...but it is not even close to being my favorite Kurosawa movie.
