I had it all planned out....my 1000th movie watched of 2014 was going to be Planes, Trains and Automobiles. I put the movie in the dvd player....and nothing happened. I cleaned the dvd and put it back in....and nothing happened. I took the dvd to another dvd player....and nothing happened. So I am sad to report that one of my favorite dvds of all-time in my 2000 plus dvd collection....Planes, Trains and Automobiles has finally been worn out.
So my 1000th movie of 2014 turned out to be Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind....which is ranked as the 85th best movie on IMDb. In this one Jim Carrey and Kate Winslet star as a recently broken up couple. Both decide to get their relationship wiped away forever by memory erase experts Tom Wilkinson, Kristen Dunst, Mark Ruffalo and Elijah Wood. This crazy story comes from the warped mind of Oscar winner Charlie Kaufman.
Overall I liked this movie.....but I felt it fell a little short of the all-time classic that I thought I would be seeing. Carrey and Winslet make an interesting screen couple....with Winslet actually being the more out of control character. Their story was interesting. The movie's story is very original and one that seems will get better with each additional viewing. On the negative side I did not find the Ruffalo or Dunst storyline interesting at all. Final thought: This is a memorable movie filled with some nice performances....and it is a movie that I will watch again.....but I still think Being John Malkovich is a better Kaufman movie.
