While initially skeptical that a film could successfully serve as love letter to a played-out genre reliant on rigid tropes while providing a fresh approach and still achieving subversion, I can truly say I was genuinely shocked by how much my expectations were shattered.
I went into this film under the impression that this movie was going to be about a large orgy that took place within a large mansion. I was certain that “Knives out” was a sexual euphemism referring to the exposed state of male genitalia that would begin the ceremony rituals within the mansion.
This shows Director Rian Johnson’s impressive skill in purposefully misleading the audiences expectations. Even his last name “Johnson” served as another clever and intentional phallic misdirect. Bravo sir. Bravo.
