    I'm conflicted.

    Although the film gives Riggan definable goals and weaknesses, comments on art, critique and entertainment, and uses an impressively disguised long take, I found it incoherent and unsatisfying.

    How does he learn? How does he change? What does Riggan discover?

    Director Iñárritu says in a Deadline article,

    “I think there’s nothing wrong with being fixated on superheroes when you are 7 years old, but I think there’s a disease in not growing up.” — Alejandro González Iñárritu

    It’s a strange movie by a strange man.

    Back in 2019, I found a friend reading Louisa May Alcott's "Little Women". That same year, trailers for Greta Gerwig's film adaptation appeared. I watched them with care but with little interest in seeing the actual picture. Two years later, I finally watched it. Now I understand why it caused such a buzz.

After Haku shows Chihiro the pig house with her parents, he offers her some rice as she crouches by the edge of a field. And as she chows down on the magically infused grain, a stream of tears begin to flow before she breaks down completely. It was at this moment I realised I needed Chihiro to succeed.
