    The Taste of Tea

beneath the worldly bemusement on immediate display here is a widespread feeling of disconnect that i’ve had trapped in myself for a long time now. i find that it’s hard to represent through words, as it isn’t always present but is still hard for me to understand the longevity of; seems to always start as a chain of contradictory strong fears over feeling suddenly weightless, then usually leading to strong urges to abandon all things and vanish that make way…

how great is it that the final film of tony scott’s career plays as a victory lap of his stylistic interests and as a historical respective of the medium itself; a total mastery in depicting the movement of trains, cars and even horses, the early moving objects of interest in 19th century film, visualized through the form that scott developed and perfected in the late 20th and early 21st centuries, recreating a 2001 runaway train accident for a film released in 2010 and yet made for all of time. we miss ya tony.

vivacious, indescribably beautiful primary colors that sterilize under the weight of the suburban blanket of comfort that’s championed so strongly. Spielberg’s own commitment and belief in the story is stronger than the power of belief generated by the film itself; i just don’t see how the imagination and wonder encouraged to be felt here can exist under such a tightly controlled form. but, in the end i just return back to its beauty and wish that not just everything but anything else looked the way this does.

unreal. it amazes me how carpenter plays the strange yuppie contempt fantasy at the core of this story at such a maximalist far-reaching angle that any sense of sincerity or parody is blended (conquered?) to the point of a multi-faceted affect. the formal conceits here also struck me as unusual for him: an almost brakhage-esque play with blinding light, the mining of a sense of alienation from the opening alone, the utter lack of a glasses pov shot (the presentation…

too sleepy to go longer, partially cause it’s late but i can’t imagine it wouldn’t be incidental after something like this. hard to express how hypnotic this plastic light simulacrum is, and how kubrick plays his somnambulist figures so slowly as to make them seem dead, or rehearsing for a reality we’ll never see (looks like alive, huh?). absolute magic act movie.
