Jackie Coogan really was wonderful in this. Sure he could have gotten by as just another cute kid, but there are a couple scenes when he needs to sell devastation, and he nails it. His chemistry with Chaplin is perfect, and they really play off each other. I really loved/appreciated how Chaplin worked in his comedic style, but never over does it. He definitely gets up to a lot of his normal gags, but also knows when to pull back and let the emotional story come to the fore. Rightly regarded as a big step up for Chaplin in terms of filmmaking, and I'm excited to see his continual evolution.
