Portrait of a Lady on Fire

Portrait of a Lady on Fire ★★★★

Slow but contemplative. Sciamma is very confident behind the camera, and although it's probably cliche to say this about a movie that involves paintings, so many of the shots and frames in this movie feel like portraits of the characters. There's one particular shot early in the movie of Merlant warming up by the fire that was just beautiful. Both of the lead actors are excellent. There's a real lack of music throughout, but when some does come in, I found myself responding to it so much more. The last couple minutes are amazing in terms of music and acting. Sciamma wasn't necessarily on my radar until the hype for this movie was everywhere, and now that I've finally seen it, I will be looking forward to her next movie.
