My hit or miss relationship with Kevin Smith’s work continues. I didn’t like Clerks or Mallrats but loved Jay and Silent Bob and now love Chasing Amy. Of those four this one easily impressed me the most and had me the most emotionally invested.
While I’ve loved that raw shot-on-film indie feel and unfettered dialogue of all of them, this is the first one that I loved the story, the relationships, the message, and the characters. I really enjoyed the performances all around. The car scene especially really was beautifully written/acted.
Mainly I loved seeing Smith tackling serious drama and having something to say about homophobia, social norms, and love. Hopefully I get to see that more as I continue with his other work.
